Functional correlates of musical and visual ability in frontotemporal dementia

Abstract: Loss of function in the left anterior temporal lobe may lead to facilitation of artistic or musical skills. Patients with the left-sided temporal lobe variant of FTD offer an unexpected window into the neurological mediation of visual and musical talents.

“…Furthermore, bilateral activation might indicate increased interhemispheric transfer. While some have argued that creativity is solely a function of the right hemisphere [Finkelstein et al, 1991;Miller et al, 1996Miller et al, , 1998Miller et al, , 2000Murai et al, 1998;Rotenberg, 1994], others have argued that both hemispheres are involved and that interrelations between the two hemispheres are the key to creative insight [Atchley et al, 1999;Bogen and Bogen, 1969;Kwong et al, 1992]. Our data support the latter view.…”

“…Likewise, cases of artists affected by dementia whose skills were preserved for a long time during their illness, even after other cognitive functions presented severe deficits, have been documented (Cummings, Miller, Christensen, & Cherry, 2008;Fornazzari, 2005). There are also documented cases of people with neurodegenerative diseases who have developed artistic interests and skills they did not have prior to their illness (Bruce L. Miller, Boone, Cummings, Read, & Mishkin, 2000;Miller et al, 1998). As mentioned earlier, painting is an activity in which people with AD can show development.…”

“…Pobric et al (2007) argue that it is central to processing semantic information. Several studies of acquired semantic dementia show damage to the ATLs, predominantly on the left side (Miller et al, 2000;Miller et al, 1998;Treffert, 2006). Relatedly, there is evidence that inhibiting this area via rTMS reduces a person's reliance on concepts or schemas (Pobric et al, 2007;).…”
