Edentulous patients desire to reinstate oral function and aesthetics in the most comfortable state and to regain their self-esteem. Due to racial anatomic differences, there is a need to ascertain the standard height of Occlusal Rim Blocks (ORBs) for edentulous patients in Uganda. This study was aimed at statistical investigation of the standard height of ORBs among patients attending Makerere University Dental Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. This was a cross-sectional quantitative study that comprised 240 pairs of wax ORBs requested by clinicians for patients in need of complete dentures. Consecutive sampling was used to select the ORBs. The height of the anterior and posterior portions of the maxillary and mandibular ORBs were recorded using a pair of pliers and a flexible ruler, and data were entered into Excel and exported into STATA software version 15 for analysis. The mean height for the anterior portion of maxillary ORBs was 19.4 mm and for the posterior, 17.4 mm after adjustment while the mean height for the mandibular counterparts was 16.4 mm and 16.0 mm, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean height of ORB before and after adjustments and between the newly established and internationally accepted standard height of ORB. There was no significant sex difference in the mean height of ORBs. Overall, the mean height of ORBs for the Ugandan population was significantly shorter than the internationally accepted standard height. Osteoporoza është një ndër sëmundjet më të rënda siste- mike të kockave dhe një ndër problemet më të mëdha shëndetësore në mbarë botën, jo vetëm për shkak të përkeqësimit të kualitetit të jetës, por dhe humbjes së af- tësisë, dhe eventualisht me përfundim fatal. Osteoporoza është sëmundje progresive metabolike e kockave, e cila karakterizohet me humbje të masës kock- ore dhe dobësim mikro-arkitektural, e cila tutje zhvillo- het në formë progresive dhe karakterizohet me rritje të fragjilitetit të kockave dhe rritjes së rrezikut për frakturë të kockave. Komplikimi më i shpeshtë tek të sëmuret me osteoporozë është fraktura vertebrale dhe në shumtën e rasteve sëmundja diagnostikohet vetëm kur ndodhin thy- erjet e kockave, andaj sëmundja konsiderohet e rëndë me kosto të lartë të shërimit dhe rehabilitimit, dhe jo rrallë herë përfundon edhe me fatalitet [1-3]. Me qëllimi të diagnostikimit dhe trajtimit me kohë të os- teoporozës para se të ndodhin frakturat, shkenca ka ha- pur dimensionet e saja hulumtuese duke përfshirë dhe metoda të tjera diagnostikuese ku përveç DXA – testit (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry), si testim standard, të cilat do të ishin me kosto efektive dhe me të arritshme për popullatën. Duke qenë se shërbimet stomatologjike janë lehtësisht të qasshme dhe radiografia panoramike është pjesë e ru- tinës diagnostikuese stomatologjike, shkencëtarët kanë hulumtuar për parametra radiomorfometrik që do shër- benin për qëllime të diagnostikimit të osteoporozës në praktikën stomatologjike. Indikatorët radiomorfometrikë më të përdorur për këtë qëllim janë: indeksi kortikal man- dibular (MCI), indeksi panoramik mandibular (PMI) dhe indeksi mental (MI). Me anë të këtyre indekseve është treguar lidhshmëria e tyre në përcaktimin e hershëm të cilësisë, sasisë së kockave të nofullave dhe korrelacionin me densitetin mineral të kockave (DMK). Në bazë të krit- ereve të OBSH-së vlerat e DMK–së ndahen në: - mbi 1.0 (normale), - 1.0 deri në –2.5 (osteopeni) dhe - nën –2.5 (osteoporozë). Një prej teknikave më të sakta për matjen e DMK-së është testi DXA. Në shumë vende, shumica e popullsisë nuk ar- rijnë të përballojnë koston e testit DXA, prandaj bëhen hulumtimet alternative diagnostike [4-6].
