Abstract: In patients with bilateral chronic otitis media, cartilage tympanoplasty seems to provide better hearing results and graft success rates.

“…There was no significant difference in audiometric results between the two groups ( p > 0.05), although there was a trend towards better post-operative results in the ring group. 10 Graft success rates of 65.9 per cent for the fascia group and 92.3 per cent for the cartilage group were reported by Onal et al 15 Post-operatively, the mean ± standard deviation air conduction threshold was 28.54 ± 14.20 dB for the fascia group and 22.97 ± 8.37 dB for the cartilage group, while the mean ± standard deviation bone conduction threshold was 11.71 ± 8.50 dB for the fascia group and 7.15 ± 5.56 dB for the cartilage group.…”

“…All previous studies have compared tympanoplasty outcomes using temporalis fascia with whole thickness cartilage. 1,9,10,14,15 A total of 223 ears underwent type I tympanoplasty using a sliced tragal cartilage-perichondrium composite graft and 167 underwent temporalis fascia tympanoplasty, with a minimum follow up of 4 years. 3 Success was defined as anatomical intactness of the tympanic membrane and hearing improvement by post-operative ABG closure.…”

“…This known but unproven fact has encouraged surgeons to use cartilage material in tympanoplasty procedures, especially for bilateral cases. Cartilage material has strong mechanical endurance and resistance to infection under negative pressure changes inside the middle ear [1][2][3][4] . Some surgeons have reported superior results using cartilage grafting in patients with bilateral chronic otitis media, which is an indicator of poor eustachian tube function [3,4] .…”

Several studies have been conducted to determine the cutoff age for performing tympanoplasty in children; however, this subject is still highly debated [5][6][7] .…”

“…9 The reported protrusion risk for hydroxyapatite prostheses is 2-16 per cent. [14][15][16][17] We attempted to include a homogeneous patient group to facilitate comparison by excluding patients younger than 15 years of age and those who had undergone concomitant canal wall down mastoidectomy. 7 Gold is a biocompatible material that is easy to shape and stabilise, and is well tolerated.…”
