Functional status of pediatric patients after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: A five-year single-center study

Abstract: ObjectiveExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a widely used treatment for circulatory and pulmonary support in newborns and young children. Over the past decade, the number of children successfully treated with ECMO has gradually increased. However, despite an increasing number of survivors, new morbidity and long-term health issues are becoming more prevalent. A better understanding of the pediatric ECMO prognosis contributes to improved treatment and care programs and minimizes the risk of sequelae … Show more

“…While elective cannulation to ECMO is increasing, pediatric patients on ECMO have a high risk of morbidity and mortality (16). In FBA cases requiring ECMO, the survival to hospital discharge is greater than 90%, while data on other complications are limited given there are only case reports described (1).…”

“…Although there is variability in mortality rates and availability of ECMO for pediatric ARDS across the world, there is increasing focus on longer-term functional outcomes in both pediatric ARDS (10)(11)(12) and pediatric ECMO survivors (13)(14)(15). This is an important consideration in the context of factors that determine ECMO candidacy.…”
