Functional Testing in Glaucoma Diagnosis

Abstract: The glaucomas are a group of diseases characterized by progressive optic neuropathy, often leading to partial or complete vision loss. Early recognition and careful monitoring for disease advancement are critical for prevention of vision loss. Frequently, asymptomatic defects in the patient's field of vision are key elements to diagnosis. Thus, it is important that the ophthalmologist stay informed regarding tools available for visual field assessment. This review will discuss the current functional testing mo… Show more

“…Successful intervention often depends on the recognition of changes in the optic nerve head (ONH) and/or retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) before visual field loss is manifest . Comprehensive ONH and visual field assessments are a basic component of glaucoma diagnosis complemented by gonioscopy and the measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP) and central corneal thickness (CCT) …”

“…These include pattern ERG, 16 multifocal ERG, 17,18 and multifocal VEP, 19,20 all of which require a high level of operator expertise and patient compliance and cooperation. 21 It has also been proposed that eye movements can provide an objective assessment of a patient's visual status. For example, in eye movement perimetry (EMP) a patient's saccades to peripherally presented targets are used to quantify visual function across the field.…”
