Crease-resistant functionalization of cotton fabric was carried out using a combination of monofunctional carboxylic acid-based precursors, i.e. acrylic acid and dodecanoic acid. The reaction of precursors with cotton was carried out in situ using helium atmospheric pressure plasma at low frequency. After the treatment, a 40 % increase in CRA was achieved. The functional property developed after the treatment was durable against both solvent and soap washing. The effect of various parameters, such as the concentration of the precursor, helium flow rate, discharge power density and treatment time, on functionalization was investigated. Plasma was characterized using oscilloscope and optical emission spectroscopy. Modification of the chemical nature of the fabric surface was characterized by ATR-FTIR. The study of the surface morphology by FE-SEM revealed the formation of a uniform thin layer on individual fibers. The loss in tearing strength was limited to 28 %, while tensile strength remained unaffected. The plasma characteristics were correlated with crease-resistant functionalization.

Plasma treatment of viscose cellulose fabric was performed using the atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in nitrogen. Samples were treated using nonthermal plasma, and change of sorption properties with plasma energy density was investigated. It was found that using low energy of discharge, modified viscose samples become less hydrophilic and their wettability is significantly reduced. The observed hydrophobic effect was investigated and confirmed throughout series of experiments, by measuring a change in wetting time and in the level of aqueous liquid repellency. Structural changes were monitored using SEM, AFM, and XPS. It was established that increase of roughness combined with removal of hydrophilic polar groups from the surface of cellulose using plasma represents a novel approach to impart hydrophobicity onto hydrophilic textile. An additional binding of copper ions to nitrogen DBD treated cellulose produces a cross‐linking effect, i.e., an occupation of remaining hydrophilic groups on the fabric surface and provides so called “petal effect” where drops of water stick to the fabric surface when the fabric is tilted for 180°. This novel procedure for obtaining hydrophobic cellulose could be used for a preparation of special protective textile materials with cost and time effective methods and chemicals.

Plasma technology used for textile and leather materials treatment is a dry, environmental friendly, and easy to operate method by which surface modification is obtained without altering the bulk properties of the materials. Particularly, nonthermal plasmas are very appropriate due to the fact that most textiles, and especially leathers, are usually heat sensitive. The major objective of this review is to provide a critical update on the present state‐of‐art relating to plasma and its effects on different textiles and leathers. We believe that the discussed subjects are helpful and may be used as an instruction guide for the future developments in the field of plasma‐activated textiles and leathers.
