Functionalization of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with End-Capped Polystyrene via a Single-Step Diels–Alder Cycloaddition

Abstract: A facile, single-step, [4+2] Diels–Alder cycloaddition reaction for the surface functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with end-capped polystyrene chains is presented. The thermal cycloaddition reaction took place at high temperature (~230 °C) without any catalyst between the sp2 network of carbon nanotubes, which acted as dienophile, and the diphenylethylene cyclobutene (DPE-CB) terminal group of the polystyrene chain. Anionic polymerization was employed for the synthesis of the polystyre… Show more

“…Cycloadditions are another family of reactions that are commonly utilized to functionalize SWCNTs. These include [2 + 1] cyclopropanations of carbenes and nitrenes, 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of azomethine ylides to form fused pyrrolidine rings, nitrile imines under microwave conditions to form pyrazoline derived tubes, zwitterionic cycloadditions, and Diels–Alder cycloadditions with and without microwave conditions. …”

“…5). 112 A Diels-Alder cycloaddition of 1,3-butadiene ( produced in situ from sulfolene) to CNTs was performed at elevated temperature. 113 Importantly, the cyclohexene ring grafted on a nanotube wall quickly oxidized or reacted with the second butadiene unit (in the presence of ambient oxygen).…”

“…In addition, various functionalization methods, such as wet chemical functionalization and plasma functionalization, have been proposed to overcome the van der Waals forces in CNTs. [22,23] Plasma functionalization has several advantages over wet chemical functionalization, including shorter treatment times, reduced damage to the CNT structure and reduced environmental impact as no wastewater is produced. [24,25] Many studies have been conducted to optimize the conditions (e.g., applied power, process pressure, and gas type) for plasma functionalization.…”
