Functionalized activated carbon for the adsorptive removal of perchlorate from water solutions

Abstract: Two types of activated carbon, namely, Filtrasorb 400 and Nuchar SA, were functionalized by quaternary ammonium salts (quats), as to enhance perchlorate adsorption. Results showed that the adsorption of quats on Nuchar SA increased with increase in chain length (hydrophobicity) of quats. Filtrasorb 400, however, had limited uptake of long-chain quats such as dodecyltrimethylammonium and hexadecyltrimethylammoium (HDTMA). Results indicated that perchlorate removal by the functionalized activated carbon was dire… Show more

“…F400 is widely used for water treatment and often considered as a reference adsorbent in studies on pollutant removal from aqueous solutions (Morlay and Joly, 2009). Prior to the adsorption experiments, the hydrophobic (Mahmudov and Huang, 2014) GAC was sieved through subsequently 600 µm and 700 µm sieves to remove course material and to obtain a narrow size distribution. This fraction of grains between 600 µm and 700 µm was used in the experiments.…”

“…We functionalized the active electrode with trimethyl quaternary amine moieties by adsorption of the common cationic surfactant cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) on the surfaces of the activated carbon ( Figure 1b). CTAB has been shown to be adsorbed on activated carbon and dramatically increase its capacity to passively adsorb high affinity ions such as perchlorate, [47]- [50] as well as provide surface charges for CDI. [51] We soaked the activated carbon electrodes in aqueous solutions of 10 mM CTAB and 10 mM NaCl overnight with roughly 1.25 g of electrode material per liter of solution.…”
