Functionalized Poly(ethylene glycol)-Stabilized Palladium Nanoparticles as an Efficient Catalyst for Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide/Poly(ethylene glycol) Biphasic Solvent System

Abstract: The functionalized Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-stabilized Pd(0) nanoparticles have been utilized to selectively oxidize alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 )/PEG (PEG-2000) biphasic system. It was demonstrated that the Pd(0) nanocatalyst was more active and selective, in comparison with the commercially available Pd/C catalyst, PVP-stabilized Pd nanocatalyst and Pd(0) catalyst without stabilization. The effects of CO 2 pressure, reaction time and temperatu… Show more

“…The origin of such size effects is revisited below. The use of colloidal Pd nanoclusters for aqueous phase alcohol selox is limited [138][139][140], wherein Pd aggregation and Pd black formation hinders catalytic performance. However, the successful stabilisation of 3.6 nm Pd nanoclusters is reported using an amphiphilic nonionic triblock copolymer, Pluronic P123; in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, 100 % aldehyde selectivity and high selox rates are achievable, with high catalytic activity maintained with negligible sintering after 13 recycling reactions [141].…”

“…The use of scCO 2 has been recently reviewed by Seki and Baiker [121]; hence, we only highlight selectively from this field. There are several reports related to Pd-nanoparticle-catalyzed alcohol selox in scCO 2 [122][123][124]. Biphasic aerobic oxidation of 3-methyl-2-butene-1-ol (and a range of allylic and benzylic alcohols) over Pd/PEG was recently found to be very efficient under continuousflow operation [125] (Figure 2.8).…”
