Functioning assessment vs. conventional medical assessment: a comparative study on health professionals' clinical decision‐making and the fit with patient's own perspective of health

Abstract: This study has shown that some health problems remain unnoticed by a medical assessment alone, which is especially important for the chronically ill. A functioning assessment provides a strong foundation for identifying all relevant information related to health.

“…Furthermore, a biopsychosocial approach through use of ICF is recommended in the management of patients with LBP (Buchbinder, et al, 2018). Evidence shows that a biopsychosocial approach captures issues of importance to patients (Coenen et al, 2006;Kirchberger et al, 2009), and adds value in clinical practice compared with a conventional biomedical approach (Stallinga, Roodbol, Annema, Jansen, & Wynia, 2014). However, our study revealed that, even though we used the ICF Core Sets as a starting point, patients still have the need to address self-identified concerns.…”

“…There are studies, in other countries, that utilised the ICF to inform interprofessional practice in different health conditions, but these were mostly within academic rather than clinical settings (Skarakis-Doyle and Doyle, 2008;Cahill et al, 2013;Snyman et al, 2015). Furthermore, the majority of studies using ICF in interprofessional care were conducted in rehabilitation settings and in high income countries (Rainey, van Nispen, & van Rens, 2014;Stallinga et al, 2014;Wijayaratne, 2015). However, studies involving interprofessional training using ICF as a communicating framework in hospital settings in resource constrained environments are scarce.…”

“…The ICF presents a common and standardised language for the description of health and health-related states (WHO, 2002). The six interactive components of ICF are structured in two main parts (WHO, 2001;Jansen, & Wynia, 2014). Part one covers information related to body functioning and disability, while part two deals with contextual factors (WHO,2001;WHO, 2013).…”

“…The functional characteristics of the ICF as a terminology have been examined in multiple use cases [16][17][18][19][20]. Some countries have started initiatives using the ICF as a standard of reporting functioning in routine EHRs [18], and evidence suggests that ICF-based documentation adds value in clinical practice [20].…”

Some countries have started initiatives using the ICF as a standard of reporting functioning in routine EHRs [18], and evidence suggests that ICF-based documentation adds value in clinical practice [20]. Furthermore, several studies provide evidence that the ICF adequately captures what matters to patients [16,17], and that the ICF is suitable to serve as a starting point for developing standardized record headings [19].…”
