Fundamental design of the high energy undulator pilot beamline for macromolecular crystallography at the SPring-8

Abstract: The SPring-8 project team adopted our proposal for public beamline as one of two pilot beamlines for standardizing the beamline elements. The light source of this beamline is an in-vacuum-type undulator of magnetic periodicity of 3.2 cm, which emits highly brilliant x rays in a wide energy range between 9 and 38 keV. The highest power emitted from the light source is 5 kW. The corresponding power density is 300 kW/mrad2. To handle the tremendous power density, grazing incidence diffraction with variable glanci… Show more

“…X-ray data collection and processing for monitoring X-ray damage All diffraction experiments were performed at the beamline BL41XU in SPring-8 (Harima, Japan) (Kamiya et al, 1995(Kamiya et al, , 1998Kawamoto et al, 2001). The storage ring of the synchrotron facility is operated in top-up mode keeping X-ray intensity constant.…”

“…8 Much theoretical work has been done on this kind of monochromator. [12][13][14][15][16] Some finite element studies were made on this type of monochromator [17][18][19] and some ray tracing calculations were done. 20 The monochromator described in the paper was originally designed as a high heat load monochromator capable of handling 5-10 kW x-ray beams from a wiggler source.…”

“…This approach, based on that of Smither & Fernandez (1994), has been adopted for SPring-8; the geometry was called a rotated-inclined monochromator (see e.g. Kamiya et al, 1995). The purpose of this paper is to show that the results obtained by Busetto & Hrdy  (1995) for the inclined double-crystal monochromator are essentially also valid (with some modi®cations) for the rotated-inclined double-crystal monochromator.…”
