Fundamental Insights into the Degradation and Stabilization of Thin Layer Black Phosphorus

Abstract: Herein, we have developed a systematic study on the oxidation and passivation of mechanically exfoliated black phosphorus (BP). We analyzed the strong anisotropic behavior of BP by scanning Raman microscopy providing an accurate method for monitoring the oxidation of BP via statistical Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, different factors influencing the environmental instability of the BP, i.e., thickness, lateral dimensions or visible light illumination, have been investigated in detail. Finally, we discovered … Show more

“…The three visible Raman active modes of pristine BP are colored blue (A 1 g ), red (B 2g ), and green (A 2 g ), respectively, in Figure 2 a. The Raman active modes that are invisible, that is, too weak, are indicated as dotted lines in Figure 2 a 39. For the intercalation compounds coloring of the sticks in Figure 2 a indicates similarity to the corresponding BP mode, violet can be viewed as mixture of the BP A 1 g and B 2g modes, black indicates other modes.…”
