Fundamental times, lengths and physical constants: Some unknown contributions by Ettore Majorana

Abstract: We review the introduction in physics of the concepts of an elementary space length and of a fundamental time scale, analyzing some related unknown contributions by Ettore Majorana. In particular, we discuss the quasi‐Coulombian scattering in presence of a finite length scale, as well as the introduction of an intrinsic (universal) time delay in the expressions for the retarded electromagnetic potentials. Finally, we also review a special model considered by Majorana in order to deduce the value of the element… Show more

“…The concept of fundamental length has a very long story, and there are two directions of investigation: a small fundamental length and a large one. Since the existence of small fundamental length could alter the physics on small scales (and high energies), the inclusion of minimal length was initially discussed in the framework of quantum physics [39]. Later these studies gave rise to more specific theories that deal with the concrete realization of fundamental length.…”

“…Classical mechanics, relativity theory and quantum physics rely upon ideas of continual time. However, ideas of discrete time are still popular subject of discussion [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]. The main efforts of the authors of these papers are focused on justifying the hypothesis of discreteness.…”

“…Finally, to conclude this literature sampling, in Ref. [8] mention is made of the (until now unknown) contributions of Ettore Majorana to the ideas of elementary (finite) length and time scales. The central theme evolving from the above-mentioned references, is that there is no physical reality besides measureable entities.…”
