Fungal Community Shifts in Structure and Function across a Boreal Forest Fire Chronosequence

Abstract: Forest fires are a common natural disturbance in forested ecosystems and have a large impact on the microbial communities in forest soils. The response of soil fungal communities to forest fire is poorly documented. Here, we investigated fungal community structure and function across a 152-year boreal forest fire chronosequence using high-throughput sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region and a functional gene array (GeoChip). Our results demonstrate that the boreal forest soil fungal com… Show more

“…This assumption is supported by our results because the Net‐Relatedness Index, an indicator of the relatedness of phylogenetic clades among different plots, was not driven by forest management. The current data are also in agreement with the observation that a moderate disturbance can increase mycorrhizal diversity (Bässler et al., ; Liu et al., ; Sun et al., ). Although our models explain only part of the variation, our approach linking phylogenetic analyses with multivariate analyses is useful because it enables us to distinguish the nature of deterministic processes.…”

“…The standard operating procedure (Kozich et al ., ; accessed 15 January 2016) for bacterial sequences and pipeline by Sun et al . () were adapted. In short, forward and reverse reads were combined and the sequencing primers were trimmed out with make.contigs and pcr.seqs.…”
