Fungal Infection among Diabetic and Nondiabetic Individuals in Nepal

Abstract: Background. Low immunity, comorbid clinical conditions, and metabolic disorders may be the underlying factors that determine the severity of infection. Diabetes increases the risk of infection and multiple organ damage. In Nepal, the actual burden of fungal infections has not been estimated or is in a limited progress. This study aimed to investigate the status of fungal infection in diabetic and nondiabetic individuals in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Materials and Methods. A total of 670 samples were collected from 134 … Show more

“…Additionally, Grk5 −/− mice were shown to exhibit higher glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels, and were more resistant to insulin. Several case reports, demonstrating A. nidulans infection in T2D patients were also recently reported 78 , 79 . Other species, including the species Yamadazyma Mexicana from the Saccharomycetales order was mapped to Chr 11 (Add; 3.9 Mb; LOD = 6.98) containing the candidate genes Nos2 and Vtn .…”

“…In routine, every patient with cutaneous fungal infections was first recommended for direct microscopy with potassium hydroxide to visualize fungal pathogens. The positive samples with the Candida-like growth were cultured on CHROMagar-Candida medium to examine and identify Candida following the standard protocol (Saud et al, 2020). Furthermore, the antifungal susceptibility tests for positive Candida cultures were performed using CLSI-recommended broth microdilution methods or ATB fungus-2 kit.…”

“…DM is a very prevalent endocrine disease that renders the individual very prone to getting infections because of immune damage. Multiple factors are involved like a drop in T-lymphocyte counts, reduced action of neutrophils, rise in programmed cell deaths of leukocytes, and reduction in the release of cytokines [ 9 ]. All of these factors get aggravated because of the hyperglycemic environment in diabetic patients [ 9 ].…”

All of these factors get aggravated because of the hyperglycemic environment in diabetic patients [ 9 ]. Recurring candida infections are a prominent sign of DM that sometimes facilitates the identification of an individual's pre-diabetic condition [ 10 ].…”
