Background: Several studies have shown anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antifungal, and antioxidant effects from Citrus limon-peel essential oil (Cl-PEO). Cl-PEO can be developed as topical drugs for oral ulceration because of its potential active components. There have been no studies on the topical application of Cl-PEO inducing type IV hypersensitivity reaction. Purpose: To investigate the potential of Cl-PEO from Batu City to induce type IV hypersensitivity reactions based on clinical changes, lymphocytes, macrophages, IFNγ, andIL10 expression. Methods: This study was adapted from a guinea pig maximization-test method in Indonesia and the guidance of ISO 10,993-10:2010, and conducted on 20 guinea pigs (Cavia cobaya) divided into a control group and a treatment group. The treatment group was given Cl-PEO and the control group CMC-Na. Clinical changes were observed, then tissue specimens taken for hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemistry staining. Results: There were no clinical changes after exposure. Lymphocyte and macrophage numbers and IFNγ and IL10 expression increased in the treatment group compared to the control group (p=0). Conclusion: Cl-PEO can induce type IV hypersensitivity reactions in guinea pigs based on cellular and molecular cytokines, but there are no clinical changes after topical application.

A Mini Review of Indonesian Medicinal Plants for Vulvovaginal Candidiasis

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is the second normal of vaginal mucosal infection after bacterial that influencing right around 70%-75% of women once in a lifetime. Azoles antibiotics are used in treatment for VVC but limited because cause drug resistance in patients. Therefore, today need for new antifungal agents for Candida albicans infection that safe and without side effect. This article reviews Indonesian medicinal plants related to the antifungal activity and mechanisms of action against C. albicans. The searches for this review were conducted via the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, online Science Direct, Science and Technology Index. The document relevant analyzed and included in the study. Almost 34 medicinal plants used for anti-Candida in Indonesia were reported. About 5.88% and 94.12% of Indonesian medicinal plants were significant and weak as an anti-Candida activity, respectively. The plants with the greatest anti-Candida activity were Curcuma xanthorrhiza and Syzygium aromaticum. The anti-Candida action involved disruption of hyphae production, membrane permeabilization, cell wall, biofilm formation, envelope, and filament formation. These results contribute to the drug discovering of the anti-Candida from Indonesian medicinal plants.

Background: Humanity is faced with various kinds of infections (viral, bacterial and fungal). The recent spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led the World Health Organization to declare the coronavirus disease outbreak as a global pandemic. Medical experts suggested that people with high immunity tend to survive the infection more than those with low immunity. Hence, people must boost their immunity by consuming more fruit and vegetable or medications with immune-boosting potential to survive any form of unforeseen infections.Aim: This study aimed to review horticultural fruit, vegetables and medicinal plants with immune-boosting potentials that may be useful in drug formulations to combat infectious diseases.Methods: A literature search was conducted on electronic databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. Several terms and free text words were combined in an appropriate manner to perform the search. Identified articles were reviewed independently for eligibility and extract of information. Results:The study highlighted medicinal and horticultural crops with the potential to combat the symptoms of Covid-19 such as cold, cough, chest pain and high fever. Details about how despite effective vaccines, respiratory infections such as asthma, tuberculosis, pneumonia and measles are causing significant death worldwide. Conclusion:This review highlights the fact that pharmaceutical companies should be encouraged to maximise the use of medicinal plants suggested for drug formulation strategies and humans should consume more fruit and vegetables to boost their immune systems. Contribution:The use of natural products is now receiving global attention against synthetic ones to combat infections and the recent COVID-19 outbreak has called for innovative methods of treating the disease and its symptoms. This review provided information about medicinal plants with immune-boosting potential that when consumed or used in drug formulations can boost immune systems against various forms of infections. Insights on how the burden of diseases can be reduced and healthy lifestyles enhanced naturally are provided for social and economic developments.
