Fungi in therapy-resistant apical periodontitis

Abstract: The occurrence of yeasts in 967 microbiological endodontic samples taken from root canals in persistent endodontic infections was studied. The sampling was done by general practitioners in various parts of Finland from root canal infections which did not respond favourably to standard conservative therapy. The samples were cultivated aerobically on a non-selective enriched horse blood agar medium, on TSBV agar medium in 5% CO 2 and anaerobically on horse blood agar medium. Micro-organisms were found in 692 of … Show more

“…In the literature, it is stated that the possibility of Candida infection should be considered in unimproved infections [5,6]. Despite the drainage procedure and antibiotics for the treatment of the infection, there was no impairment of the patient status.…”

“…14 On the other hand hypochlorite ion has a different structure and is electrically charged making it more difficult to diffuse through the cell wall thereby reducing its biocidal potential by about one hundred. 14,15 NaDCC releases free available chlorine in seconds and when needed this chlorinated isosyanurate species behaves Calcium hydroxide was totally ineffective against Candida albicans after 24 hours (Tables 7 and 8 and Graph 3) exposure as there was no inhibition of growth of the Candida (Tables 9 and 10). …”
