Fungicide Efficacy in Prevention of Root Rot Incited by Phytophthora cactorum and Phytophthora drechsleri in Fraser Fir Seedlings

Fraser fir, Abies fraseri [Pursh] Poir., is one of the most desired Christmas tree species owing to its fragrance, physical appearance, and durability. This species represents a major component of the Christmas tree industry in the southeastern United States, with production occurring in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Fraser fir production is a multi-million dollar annual industry despite growing in a limited elevational and latitudinal range. Pest management for Christmas trees is notoriously difficult owing to the near zero-tolerance of most pests, even those causing aesthetic damage. Christmas trees are produced in monocultural environments which make them highly susceptible to several arthropod and fungal pests. We review the major pests affecting Fraser fir Christmas tree production, including their biology, symptoms, and scouting procedures, and current management strategies. In general, pest management in Christmas tree production systems has not changed significantly in the last several decades, and still relies heavily on pesticide usage. We propose several areas in need of research that could help Fraser fir Christmas tree producers mitigate the impacts of climate change and potential new pest species, as well as suggest changes to current or potentially novel integrated pest management strategies which have a chance to provide economic and ecological benefits for this industry.

Plant pathogens in the genus Phytophthora are a severe threat to forest plantations, ecosystems and tree nurseries. Especially in forests and natural ecosystems, there is a lack of effective measures to control and manage these pathogens. In this study, we conducted a systematic mapping review to collate evidence regarding the control and management of forest Phytophthora in different production settings and ecosystems. The study aimed to reveal possible knowledge gaps, thus guiding future research priorities. We extracted information from nine databases, limiting the search to studies published during the time period from January 2010 to December 2022. The articles were shared between three reviewers who classified the reports using a set of inclusion/exclusion criteria. A total of 561 articles were included and mapped in a database using pre‐defined coding, and critically appraised for relevance and reliability. The analysis showed that biological or bio‐based measures were the most studied interventions, followed by genetics or breeding programmes, whereas chemical and silvicultural management approaches were less studied. Most of the studies were conducted in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Phytophthora cinnamomi has been the most studied species followed by P. ramorum. We discuss the current knowledge gaps in the implementation of existing research, likely due to a lack of holistic understanding of the processes over time and space, and suggest future research that is needed to manage Phytophthora in forest ecosystems.

Susceptibility of Fraser, Canaan, and Nordmann Fir to Root Rot Incited by Phytophthora cactorum and Phytophthora drechsleri

The susceptibility of fraser fir (Abies fraseri), canaan fir (A. balsamea var. phanerolepis), and nordmann fir (A. nordmanniana) to phytophthora root rot (PRR) incited by Phytophthora cactorum or P. drechsleri was assessed in two experiments in central Pennsylvania. In an 8-week greenhouse study, seedlings and transplants growing in soilless substrate were inoculated with Phytophthora in flooded and non-flooded settings. In an 8-week outdoor study conducted in raised planting boxes filled with soil, transplants were inoculated with Phytophthora species in well-drained and poorly drained soil. Based on foliar disease ratings, mortality rates, and dry shoot and root weights, differences in susceptibility to P. cactorum and P. drechsleri existed between these true fir (Abies) species. Fraser fir was very susceptible to P. cactorum and P. drechsleri. Canaan fir had strong resistance to P. cactorum and P. drechsleri in well-drained settings but was susceptible in poorly drained settings. Nordmann fir had very strong resistance to P. cactorum and P. drechsleri in both well-drained and poorly drained settings.
