Furthering systems theory towards social theory by revisiting critical systems thinking: connecting problem-solving and theory-building

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose is to forward systems theory one more step towards social theory and integrate problem-solving and theory-building, and search for the integration and unity of science by revealing the nature and role of critical systems thinking (CST).Design/methodology/approachThis article describes relations between systems theory and social theory in three parts. First, it examines the links of systems methodologies with three social science approaches as well as the role of CST. Second, the focus of the… Show more

“…There are generally two distinctions in systems practice: soft and hard systems thinking. While “hard” systems thinking is often used to understand a relatively well-defined technical problem, “soft” systems thinking is more suitable for solving complex management problems, and they give high importance to the presence of “human” attributes in the system hierarchy (Checkland, 2000; Lo and Liu, 2021). In dealing with real-world managerial issues, soft systems methodology can be instigated to develop conceptual models to evaluate the underlying dynamics of the system-problem structuring (Reisman and Oral, 2005).…”

“…In dealing with real-world managerial issues, soft systems methodology can be instigated to develop conceptual models to evaluate the underlying dynamics of the system-problem structuring (Reisman and Oral, 2005). That is to say, they help correctly understand an underlying cause of the problem; and adopt a consistent, satisfactory and feasible solution instead of an optimal solution (Lo and Liu, 2021). This study, therefore, used the soft systems approach using cognitive mapping to provide an explicit mental model that promotes mutual understanding of the problem among team members.…”

“…He defined a system as "a complex composed of several interacting elements", thus defining the three basic characteristics of purposefulness, dynamics, and orderliness of systems theory and emphasizing the importance of system thinking [34]. Bertalanffy's work inspired other scholars, including Bertalanffy's work inspired other scholars, including Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann, who applied systems theory to the study of social systems [35]. In the mid-20 th century, ecologists Howard T. Odum and Eugene P. Odum introduced system theory into the field of ecology, pioneering research in ecosystem ecology, energy ecology, etc., and proposing the ecosystem theory [36].…”
