Fused ring effect on optical nonlinearity and structure property relationship of anthracenyl chalcone based push-pull chromophores

Abstract: The Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra indicate that anthracenyl chalcones (ACs) have high maximum wavelengths and good transparency windows for optical applications and are suitable for optoelectronic applications owing to their HOMO–LUMO energy gaps (2.93 and 2.76 eV). Different donor substituents on the AC affect their dipole moments and nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. The positive, negative, and neutral electrostatic potential regions of the molecules were identified using molecular electrostatic pote… Show more

“…A weak peak characterizes the UV–vis spectrum of PMHMP in the 300 nm region, presumably caused by the n−π* transition of the CN group. Additionally, two prominent bands were observed in the 387 and 413 nm regions, which can be attributed to the π–π* transitions of phenyl and pyrene rings, respectively . A distinct color change from colorless to yellow was observed immediately upon the addition of Cu 2+ ions into the CH 3 CN solution of PMHMP .…”

No other metal ions, including Zn 2+ , displayed any detectable color change even after incubating for a longer time.…”

“…The synthesis process was performed using the Claisen-Schmidt condensation method, 9,12,13,18 which involved the reaction of 0.3 mmol 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde (99%) and 0.3 mmol 4 0 -bromoacetophenone (98%) (PyBr) or 3 0 -fluoro-4 0 -methoxyacetophenone (99%) (PyF) in 20 mL methanol solvent. The condensation process of PyBr and PyF was aided by sodium hydroxide (NaOH: 10 mmol, 0.4 g) as a catalyst to speed up the reaction.…”

“…Therefore, a push-pull system can be created by alternating the donor (D) and acceptor (A) anchoring part of the compound since it leads to different properties and results. 13 A previous study has explained that good transmission of ICT contributes to a strong and bathochromic shift of the longest absorption maxima wavelength in the UV-Vis absorption spectrum. 14 Thus, this proves the potential of chalcone as an excellent photovoltaic material candidate since it possesses a push-pull system, good transmission of ICT and a bathochromic shift in the absorption wavelength in the UV-Vis spectra, which lead to satisfactory cell efficiency.…”

“…Organic push–pull molecules with a delocalized π-system exhibit highly efficient optoelectronic properties and show great promise as active components in the design of organic light-emitting diodes, 1 photodiodes, 2 solar cells 3 and nonlinear optical (NLO) devices. 4–6 Their unique spectroscopic properties are attributed to an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the electron donating (D) to the electron accepting group (A) separated by a π-linker. 7 ICT generates a molecular dipole and polarization that imparts distinct electronic, linear and nonlinear optical properties to the molecule.…”
