Fusing electromagnetic one-way edge states to achieve broadband unidirectional wave transmission

Abstract: There exist two types of electromagnetic (EM) one-way edge states in magnetic photonic crystal (MPC). One is associated with photonic band gap (PBG) relevant to Bragg scattering, while the other is associated with PBG originating from magnetic surface plasmon resonance. Both support robust unidirectional wave transmission, but each with relatively limited operating bandwidth. By optimizing the lattice spacing and filling ratio of MPC as well as tuning the external static biasing magnetic field, we are able to … Show more

“…As further features of topological edge states, it was later shown that they can self-guide in air (Ao et al, 2009;Li et al, 2015cLi et al, , 2014bLiu et al, 2012;Lu et al, 2013a;Poo et al, 2011), appear in coupled defect cavities (Fang et al, 2011), have robust local density of states (Asatryan et al, 2013(Asatryan et al, , 2014, be modeled in time domain (Li et al, 2013), self-collimate unidirectionally (Li et al, 2015a), be realized in materials of Tellegen magnetoelectric couplings (He et al, 2016b;Jacobs et al, 2015;Ochiai, 2015b;Sun et al, 2017b), form bulk flat bands (Yang et al, 2017b,c), and be immune to disorder in the bulk (Mansha and Chong, 2017;Xiao and Fan, 2017a). Remarkably, while it was previously known that one-way modes can exist on the surfaces of continuous magnetic media (Deng et al, 2015;Gangaraj and Hanson, 2017;Hartstein et al, 1973;Ochiai, 2015a;Shen et al, 2015;Yu et al, 2014Yu et al, , 2008Zhang et al, 2012), the topological origin of these modes was only recently unveiled (Silveirinha, 2015(Silveirinha, , 2016a.…”
