The education sector has benefited enormously through integrating digital technology driven tools and platforms. In recent years, artificial intelligence based methods are being considered as the next generation of technology that can enhance the experience of education for students, teachers, and administrative staff alike. The concurrent boom of necessary infrastructure, digitized data and general social awareness has propelled these efforts further. In this review article, we investigate how artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning methods are being utilized to support the education process. We do this through the lens of a novel categorization approach. We consider the involvement of AI-driven methods in the education process in its entirety—from students admissions, course scheduling, and content generation in the proactive planning phase to knowledge delivery, performance assessment, and outcome prediction in the reactive execution phase. We outline and analyze the major research directions under proactive and reactive engagement of AI in education using a representative group of 195 original research articles published in the past two decades, i.e., 2003–2022. We discuss the paradigm shifts in the solution approaches proposed, particularly with respect to the choice of data and algorithms used over this time. We further discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced this field of active development and the existing infrastructural challenges and ethical concerns pertaining to global adoption of artificial intelligence for education.

Soft skills have become increasingly essential for success in the modern world, especially in the labor market, where employers value employees’ social and communication skills. Online education, which is an integral part of the educational process in Ukraine, is adjusting to the development of students’ soft skills. Integrating artificial intelligence tools into English language learning is becoming a new direction in soft skills development. This approach opens up new teaching strategies that make learning more effective, engaging, and innovative. While learning English, students develop communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills, which contribute to their educational process and prepare the foundation for employment. The study aims to 1) evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence on the development of students’ soft skills in online learning; 2) identify the most essential soft skills for their effective learning and future employment based on a student survey; 3) develop criteria for an online course using artificial intelligence and outline strategies for integrating the ChatGPT tool into distance learning English classes. To achieve the objectives of our study, we developed and processed a questionnaire, collected quantitative data, and analyzed and interpreted qualitative data; the study sample included 304 students. The questionnaire results showed a generally positive attitude of students towards using artificial intelligence in English for Specific Purposes courses. They opened up prospects for introducing an online course in the English for Specific Purposes program and further research, including an experiment with the introduction of this online course.

Actualmente se han desarrollado soluciones tecnológicas a través de aplicaciones de software como herramientas que permitan luchar contra la pandemia de la Covid-19, desde instituciones de educación y empresas de diferentes sectores económicos, lo que ha sido de alto impacto y aporte. Esto se ha dado tanto a nivel internacional como nacional, por lo cual se han evidenciado beneficios en las áreas de la medicina, la industria, la educación entre otras mediante la articulación de las técnicas de Análisis de Datos masivos (Big Data), Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) e Inteligencia Artificial. En el presente artículo se describe el desarrollo una plataforma implementada en una institución de educación como estrategia para cumplir con el protocolo de bioseguridad exigido por el Ministerio de Salud con el fin de hacer frente al Covid-19 obtener información para buscar soluciones a tiempo, brindarle atención a la población más vulnerable y permitir el retorno progresivo a las instalaciones. Para su desarrollo de implementó la metodología Scrum obteniendo como resultado el prototipo funcional de la plataforma y se concluye con una descripción de las mejores y más eficientes prácticas encontradas, poniéndolas en relación con el derecho a la privacidad y la protección de los datos personales.
