Future experiments using forward electron spectroscopy to study the quantum dynamics of high-Zions at the ESR/CRYRING storage rings

Abstract: At the FAIR facility for antiproton and ion research, the new ESR + CRYRING combination of storage rings CRYRING@ESR opens up a wealth of opportunities for in-ring atomic physics experiments on few-body quantum dynamics. The low-energy storage ring CRYRING will serve in its new location at FAIR/ESR for experiments with decelerated antiprotons and highly charged ions. We will discuss selected new experiments in the field of quantum dynamics of high-Z ions, for example for adiabatic superheavy quasi-molecules tr… Show more

“…Compared to the projectile energies available at the ESR, the energy range of highly charged ions available will be extended towards lower energies at CRYRING@ESR [58] and towards higher energies at HESR [59]. For the investigation of RECC highly charged heavy ions at low energies are advantageous since both the cross section and the asymmetry of the RECC cusp increase with decreasing projectile energy [26,31].…”

“…Once FRANZ starts operation, it might be possible to reduce the flight path to about 10 cm, thus extending the possibilities for measure-ments on unstable samples significantly. Recently, neutron-induced reactions in inverse kinematics have been proposed [23] by combining a beam of radioactive ions cycling in a storage ring similar to the CRYRING at GSI/FAIR [24] with a reactor core or a cold neutron beam as the neutron target. This method would also provide an option for unstable isotopes with half-lives below about a week, too short for measurements with stationary samples.…”

“…Furthermore, since a low energy storage ring CRYRING is being constructed downstream the ESR [170] a backwards connection of the FAIR facilities with the ESR-CRYRING would offer a great potential for physics with slow cold ion or antiproton beams. With CRYRING, ESR, CR, and HESR, FAIR will offer stable and radioactive HCIs in a broad and continuous range of energies from a few hundreds keV/u (CRYRING) until 5-6 GeV/u (HESR) thus allowing for unique atomic and nuclear physics experiments (see, e.g., [172,173,174,175,176,177,178,179,180,181,182,183]). …”
