Future goals of adolescents and young adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain

Abstract: Dealing with chronic pain in adolescence and early adulthood does not seem to change future goals, but is associated with perceiving barriers to achieving them. The level of depressive symptoms seems to influence this relationship. Some caution is required in generalizing the results due to the relatively low number of male participants.

“…Thus, chronic pain can significantly disrupt the development of children and adolescents and hamper the pursuit of personal goals [57]. Paradoxically, at the same time, many youngsters with chronic pain are able to live adaptively and pursue personal goals, in spite of experiencing chronic pain [3, 6, 8, 9]. An important question to consider, then, is why some children and adolescents are able to live adaptively and to continue pursuing their personal goals in spite of their chronic condition, while others are not.…”

“…29 This is described as a time where emotional stability is not yet established. 32 The identified future goals of adolescents and YAs with chronic musculoskeletal pain when compared with those without pain showed little difference despite the identification of greater levels of goal frustration (Stommen et al, 2015). 47 The latter is possibly connected with a perception of being unable to engage in normative developmental tasks.…”

“…However, adolescents with musculoskeletal pain reported higher frustration with goals pertaining to personal values, social acceptance, self-acceptance, and health compared with adolescents without musculoskeletal pain. In both studies, increased goal frustration was associated with higher depression and lower quality of life [19,20]. These findings suggest that, while there are few differences in adolescent perceptions of goal importance, there seems to be a relationship between higher goal frustration and poorer well-being.…”

“…Two studies have investigated goal frustration in youth with chronic pain, one including youth with and without headaches [19] and one including youth with and without musculoskeletal pain [20]. In both studies, youth rated goal importance and frustration on six categories including personal values, social acceptance, self-acceptance, school, health, and self-development.…”
