Enhancing the reliability of wireless links plays an important role in addressing the digital divide between under-developed and developed nations. Diversity techniques are used in wireless communication to improve link reliability. This article presents a broadcasting system that incorporates space, time, polarization and labeling diversity. The key challenge in incorporating labeling diversity into a system is the design of appropriate bit-to-symbol mappers. The latest technique to designing bit-to-symbol mappers is to use a genetic algorithm approach, which is applicable to any generic modulation scheme. This article presents a modified genetic algorithm mapper design algorithm based on recent advances in labeling diversity evaluation theory. The proposed system is studied under ideal (uncorrelated) conditions, as well as in the presence of inter-beam and inter-antenna inference (correlated conditions). Analytical expressions are presented to model both the correlated and uncorrelated systems, and are verified via Monte Carlo simulations. When compared to the best comparable scheme at a bit-error-rate of 10 −6 , results show that the proposed system improves performance by ≈7 dB for a 2 × 2 16APSK system configuration, and by ≈5 dB for both 2 × 4 32APSK and 2 × 2 64APSK system configurations.Results also show that the proposed system is highly sensitive to correlation at the transmitting node. In particular, transmit-side correlation degrades link reliability by 4 orders of magnitude for the 2 × 3 8APSK configuration studied at 25 dB.

This paper deals with the design and experimental results of the Engineering Model of a Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) based on 100 nm gate length Gallium Nitride on Silicon technology and spatial power combining techniques, targeting Ka-band downlink SatCom applications. The SSPA is divided in two main units: the Radio Frequency Tray (RFT) to amplify the useful signal, and the Electronic Power Conditioner to interface the module with the satellite primary bus, to actuate remote telecommand/telemetry services and to set different operating modes. In the overall bandwidth (17.3-20.2 GHz), the SSPA delivers up to 125 W of output power with a minimum efficiency and gain of 24% and 70 dB, respectively. Such remarkable output power level has been achieved combining 16 Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits Power Amplifiers designed ad-hoc, with a low-loss Radial splitter/combiner structure developed in waveguide. The RFT of the SSPA also includes a gain control unit, an analogue linearizer and a driver together with a waveguide coupler and an isolator at the output.

Space‐time block code (STBC)–based multiple‐input–multiple‐output techniques have been considered recently to enhance the performance of mobile satellite communication systems in terms of link reliability. Uncoded space‐time labelling diversity (USTLD) is a diversity technique that is a direct extension of the STBC system and further improves its performance. A USTLD system is proposed in this paper that is designed specifically for satellite to mobile station links. The circular M‐ary Amplitude Phase‐Shift Keying (MAPSK) constellation, which is adopted by the most recent satellite broadcasting standard Digital Video Broadcasting standard for nonlinear satellite links (DVB‐S2X), is applied to the USTLD system. The most critical aspect of developing a USTLD system is the design of the secondary mapper to achieve labelling diversity. Existing square M‐ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (MQAM) approaches to USTLD mapper design are adapted for appropriate 16APSK and 64APSK constellations from the DVB‐S2X standard. Various metrics are derived to quantitatively compare mapper designs for a Nakagami‐q fading channel. Theoretical results, verified by Monte Carlo simulations, show that the best of the MAPSK USTLD mappers considered achieve a gain of approximately 4 dB for 16APSK and 5 dB for 64APSK when compared to the Alamouti STBC system. Furthermore, a study is conducted to analytically compare USTLD mappers using the derived metrics for both MQAM and MAPSK. It is concluded that a two‐stage approach is the most accurate methodology for comparing USTLD mapper designs.
