Digitizing buildings via building information modelling (BIM) is increasingly gaining traction in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. The plethora of BIM-based technologies affects both inter-and intra-organizational relations. Structured inter-organizational networks across tiers, such as supply chain (SC) partnerships were used to examine how BIM affects these changing relations across and within firms' boundaries. Empirical explorations around the interplay between BIM and SC partnering -as a proxy for supply chain management (SCM) philosophywere deployed to assess their contribution to SC integration, and to investigate the functions of key actors in AEC. One young and one long-standing SC partnership were studied, and it was observed that the contractual arrangements had to be complemented by well-defined BIM scope, and communications across multiple tiers to built trust and support collaboration in the network. There were two types of BIM-enabled SC partnering: with emphasis on either transactions or relations, the former being merely operational whereas the latter strategic. These interorganizational orientations of BIM-enabled SC partnering outlined further intra-organizational conditions for integration regarding functional division, business models and services offered. The study carries implications for BIM and SCM researchers, policy-makers and practitioners, and proposes strategies for SC integration by aligning intra-with inter-organizational relations.

A Global Review of Sustainable Construction Project Financing: Policies, Practices, and Research Efforts

Despite the increasing investment in sustainable development over the past decade, a systematic review of sustainable construction project financing is lacking. The objectives of this paper are to conduct a systematic review to examine the policies, practices, and research efforts in the area of sustainable construction project financing, and to explore the potential opportunities for the future research. To achieve these goals, this paper first reviewed the sustainable construction project financing practices implemented by four representative developed economies including the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, and Australia. Then, this paper reviewed the efforts and initiatives launched by three international organizations including the United Nations, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and International Finance Corporation. After that, this paper reviewed the research efforts of sustainable construction project financing published in peer-review journals and books. This paper identified four major research themes within this area, which are the review of financial stakeholders and market of sustainable construction, benefits and barriers to sustainable construction project financing, financial vehicles for sustainable construction projects, innovative models and mechanisms for sustainable construction project financing. Additionally, this paper revealed five directions for the future research of sustainable construction project financing, which are the identification of financial issues in sustainable construction projects, the investigation of financial vehicles for sustainable construction projects in terms of their strengths, limitations, and performances, the examination of critical drivers for implementing sustainable construction project financing, the development of a knowledge-based decision support system for implementing sustainable construction financing, and the development of best practices for implementing sustainable construction project financing. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by reviewing existing policies, practices, and research efforts in the area of sustainable construction project financing. Meanwhile, the findings from this paper benefit the industry as well, because they are able to provide the practitioners with a holistic view of sustainable construction project financing, thereby enhancing their knowledge and skills in this regard.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has become a well-known established extensive collaborative process and an important area of development in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry and has transcended all disciplines. The use of BIM in construction projects can possibly increase the information quality needed for making critical design decisions to access a building's environmental impact. Analysis, design and infrastructure of buildings are formulated with the help of samples generated from BIM. In the last decade, BIM has witnessed an increasing development. This was a result of their rapid capabilities applicable to construction projects. BIM can generate a common language for all divisions of parties and systems in a project and make them a combined team. The BIM method is strongly matched with delivery systems for integrated projects. Harnessing the unrealized possibility of the full life cycle use of the model by integrating it with the amenities and property management phases of buildings and infrastructure is one of the advantages of BIM which makes it suitable to the industry. This analysis is intended to show the correspondence of BIM and project manager's roles on construction projects. It insists on the significance of proper knowledge and experience of project managers to get succeeded in BIM. Initially, this review presents an in-depth analysis of present literature frameworks and surrounding methodologies to assess and examine the BIM advantages and static design. Then 3D, 4D BIM and BIM based scheduling techniques are examined. The use of the term 4D to refer to the fourth dimension time is also discussed. i.e. 4D is 3D + schedule (time). The role of 4D BIM is to add a novel dimension to 3D CAD or solid modelling. The paper also reviews the issues regarding the BIM implementation, static design and intrinsic problems related with an attempt to assess the advantages in a purely quantitative fashion. Through the application of BIM technology for the dynamic querying and statistical investigation of construction schedules, engineering, resources and costs are the three implementations considered to be proved as how BIM can ease the extensive grasp of a project's implementation and progress. Recognition, conflict solving, contradictions between construction resources and control costs, decreasing project over-spends and protecting the resource supply are also dealt with. A BIM overview with specifications on its core and cycle concepts, benefits of the project life with the help of surveys has been discussed. The paper also elaborates risks and obstacles in BIM implementation and future BIM trends.
