Fuzzy logic-based mobile computing system for hand rehabilitation after neurological injury

Abstract: The proposed virtual reality system can be customized for specific therapeutic purposes. Commercial development of the system could immediately provide stroke patients with an effective in-home rehabilitation therapy for improving hand problems.

“…They propose a fuzzy‐logic adaptation engine to support decision making relative to the appropriate intensity level of a rehabilitation task considering the task angle (different tilting positions of the wrist), the velocity, and the jerkiness of the wrist. In the work proposed by Chiu et al (), an Android application is implemented to (a) collect quantitative data of hand movements to monitor treatment progress, (b) collect statistical data to assess self‐rehabilitation progress, (c) motivate the use of an assistive system for hand rehabilitation by using virtual reality and game‐based modalities, and (d) provide automatic feedback on hand rehabilitation progress by means of a computer‐aided decision making mechanism. Zhang, Fang, and Gu () present an upper‐extremity motion evaluation system based on fuzzy logic to provide a reliable solution for objective motion quality assessment.…”

“…where the use of Tablets or iPods has been complemented by peripherals, where the combination of motion sensors with Bluetooth communication allows capturing movement data and grip strength as the user draws a certain pattern or template on the Tablet [63]. The system compares the performance of the user with that of the template, and based on this, the execution score is determined.…”

“…Some of these advantages are adaptation, personalization, hygiene, materials used, or environmental impact, among others. The incursion of these new 3D techniques in medical processes allows to include smart systems to analyze different states of the medical evolution process [ 21 ]. This study proposes to combine 3D techniques with electronic systems to develop a new era of splints that have not been achieved before.…”
