FVS 2.0: A unifying framework for understanding the factors of visual-attentional processing.

Abstract: Across a broad range of stimulus types and tasks (16 stimulus types × 26 tasks, 1744 observers in total), the present study employed an individual-item differences analysis to extract the factors of visual-attentional processing. Three orthogonal factors were identified and they can be summarized as an FVS 2.0 framework: featural, visual, and spatial strengths. Apart from one exception (low-level motion), the FVS 2.0 framework accounts for the vast majority (95.4%) of the variances in the 25 tasks. Therefore, … Show more

“…They found 24 different distinct emotions which could be clustered broadly around different categories such as valence, safety, and fairness. Huang (2022) proposed the FVS model for how people perceive visual stimuli, emphasizing three main factors: featural strength (how much a stimulus has preattentive features such as colors or shapes), visual strength (whether a stimulus is seen in high contrast against a background), and spatial strength (how much a specific stimulus would be represented in a larger array of different types of similar stimuli). Rentfrow et al (2011) focused on the different ways that we perceive media and entertainment (such as music, film, or literature) and found two higher-order factors (Lowbrow and Highbrow) with five lower-order dimensions (Aesthetic, Cerebral, Communal, Dark, and Thrilling).…”
