G-Protein β3 Subunit C825T Polymorphism Tends to Be Associated with Seasonal Variation in Young Male College Students

Abstract: This study investigated the relationship between G-protein β3 subunit (GNB3) C825T polymorphism and seasonal variation in 189 young male college students. The subjects were genotyped for C825T and were evaluated by the Seasonality Pattern Assessment Questionnaire. The Global Seasonality Score (GSS) between the three genotypes revealed a marginal difference. The heterozygotes showed significantly higher seasonal variations in GSS than the homozygotes. The prevalence of heterozygotes tended to be high… Show more

“…The frequencies of the T allele in Asian populations (42-56%) are different from those in Caucasians (27-42%). In our previous studies, similar frequencies were obtained (Lee et al, 2004;Lee et al, 2005). Japanese study by Kunugi et al (2002) also reported 0.53 frequency of the T allele.…”

“…The Gb3s variant has been reported to be not only associated with increased signal transduction and ion transport but also with pathophysiological conditions such as hypertension (Siffert et al, 1998) and obesity (Hegele et al, 1999). Furthermore, the GNB3 variant has been associated with depression (Lee et al, 2004;Zill et al, 2000) and seasonal affective disorder (Lee et al, 2005). Interestingly, the GNB3 gene appears to be associated with response to antidepressants (Lee et al, 2004;Zill et al, 2000).…”

“…Furthermore, an increased susceptibility for depressive mood in healthy young 825T allele carriers has recently been described [4] . Also, instability of mood due to seasonal variation is associated with the GNB3 C825T polymorphism [20] , suggesting a relationship between affective responsivity and the GNB3 C825T polymorphism in general.…”

“…For instance, employees may be concerned about the confidentiality of their responses but may feel pressured to participate nonetheless (and this may compromise their responses) and absenteeism due to SAD may bias the sample. Similar problems likely apply to the studies KM cite that use student samples, including Han et al (2000aHan et al ( , 2000b, Soriano et al (2007), Lee et al (2005), and Lee et al (2006). Authors of several of the studies KM cite in their Appendix A are careful to note, themselves, that their samples are not representative of the general population.…”

“…Ozaki et al caution against generalizing on the basis of their findings, even within country: ''Our ability to generalize from the present findings is limited because the subjects studied were not representative of the Japanese population as a whole'' (p. 1226). One must keep such points in mind when different statistics arise from geographically similar locations: the Ozaki et al study finds less than 1% of their Japanese sample experiences SAD while Lee et al (2005Lee et al ( , 2006 find more than 10% of their Korean samples experience SAD. Yet KM fail to qualify their crosscountry and cross-study comparisons in any way.…”
