GABA C receptors in neuroendocrine gut cells: a new GABA-binding site in the gut

Abstract: Although GABA(C) receptors play a crucial role in the mammalian central nervous system, their functional expression in peripheral tissues has not yet been studied. Using the gut neuroendocrine tumor cell line STC-1 as a model, we provide first evidence for the functional expression of GABA(C) receptors in the gut: mRNAs of the GABA(C) receptor subunits rho1 and rho2 were detected in STC-1 cells by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Applying anti-rho-antibodies, specific immunostaining fo… Show more

“…The ρ subunit family is also highly expressed in the retina (Enz et al, 1995). Functional GABAC receptors were also found in several hormone secretory organs, such as the pancreas and the pituitary glands (GamelDidelon et al, 2003;Jansen et al, 2000). Therefore, the necessary subunits needed to assemble a functional GABA A or GABA C receptor are present in fetal pulmonary epithelial cells.…”

“…In this study, we show that TRPA1 channel is expressed in the human and mouse duodenum. In order to investigate the possible function we used mouse intestinal neuroendocrine cell line STC-1 as a well-established model for intestinal hormone release (CCK, GLP-1, GIP) [12][13][14][15] and show that activation of TRPA1 channels with mustard oil derived AITC elevates the intracellular Ca 2+ levels and stimulates cholecystokinin release.…”

“…Furthermore, ρ subunits were detected in secretory cells of the pituitary, in neurons of the gastrointestinal tract and in a neuroendocrine tumour cell line of the gut [37][38][39][40]. These findings suggest that in addition to regulating neurotransmission, GABA C receptors are associated with secretory pathways.…”
