Gabapentin Improves Symptoms of Functional Dyspepsia in a Retrospective, Open-label Cohort Study

Abstract: In a retrospective, open-label cohort of patients treated with gabapentin for functional dyspepsia, there were significant improvements in dyspeptic symptoms interpreted within the limitations of an open-label study design. Further studies are needed to place gabapentin in the functional dyspepsia treatment algorithm.

“…21 Studies suggest that low-dose gabapentin may be effective in the treatment of functional dyspepsia and N/V. 22 Pain management is also important as abdominal pain is a frequent symptom in those with chronic N/V. Opioids should be avoided as they can worsen gastric motility and nausea.…”

“…Gabapentin led to a significant improvement of dyspeptic symptoms such as abdominal pain and postprandial fullness in a retrospective study [ 85 ]. An RCT on 126 refractory FD patients, either taking omeprazole 20 mg ID plus placebo or omeprazole 20 mg ID plus gabapentin 300 mg BID, showed that both groups had a reduction in the severity of symptoms that was higher in the gabapentin group, although without statistical significance [ 86 ].…”
