“…In addition to the well-reported conflicts between ASM and LSM in Tanzania (Carstens & Hilson, 2011) and Ghana (Hilson, 2002;Hilson & Yakovleva, 2007;Okoh, 2013;Patel et al, 2016), a range of other countries have also witnessed incidents between rights-wielding LSM-companies and ASM-operators (World Bank, 2009). Transcending this preoccupation with outright ASM-LSM conflict, several authors provide us with detailed, empirically rich case study evidence of ASM-LSM relations in countries like Tanzania (Chachage, 1995), the DRC (Geenen & Claessens, 2013) and Burkina Faso (Luning, 2008(Luning, , 2014Mégret, 2011). These accounts demonstrate that, rather than 'a simplistic contrasting of small-scale mining and large-scale mining' (Mégret, 2011: 394), ASM-LSM interactions often involve an entire range of actors and relations that cut across the ASM-LSM divide.…”
