Galaxy Cluster Mass Reconstruction Project – II. Quantifying scatter and bias using contrasting mock catalogues

Abstract: This article is the second in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our aim is to quantify the scatter, systematic bias and completeness of cluster masses derived from a diverse set of 25 galaxy-based methods using two contrasting mock galaxy catalogues based on a sophisticated halo occupation model and a semi-analytic model. Analysing 968 clusters, we find a wide range in t… Show more

“…For this study, we use only results of galaxy-based techniques which were tested on mock clusters from the Semi-Analytic Model (SAM)-based dataset described in Section 2.3, where the dynamical properties of the galaxies are taken directly from the underlying N-body dark matter subhaloes themselves (unlike the HOD2 model used in Old et al 2015).…”

“…As described in more detail in Old et al (2015), this galaxy formation model is applied to the merger trees described in Section 2.1. In each tree and at each redshift, virialised dark matter haloes are assumed to attract pristine gas from the surrounding environment, from which galaxies form and evolve.…”

“…A similar procedure to calculate the dynamical mass of the supercluster was used in Einasto et al (2015). The reliability of group mass estimation method and mass errors were analysed in Old et al (2014Old et al ( , 2015, where various mass estimation methods were tested on mock galaxy catalogues. The method used in this work performs reasonably well without a clear bias between true and estimated masses.…”

“…Old et al (2014Old et al ( , 2015 compared several mass estimation methods using simulated mock galaxy catalogues. The compared mass estimation methods can be divided into several classes: abundance matching, richnessbased methods, virial theorem, various phase-space based methods, caustic technique (see Old et al 2014Old et al , 2015, for references and more details about various methods). According to the comparison results the virial theorem based method used in Tempel et al (2014b) produces quite reliable masses with reasonable scatter compared with the true masses of the galaxy groups/clusters.…”
