Galaxy-scale ionised winds driven by ultra-fast outflows in two nearby quasars

Abstract: We used MUSE adaptive optics data in narrow field mode to study the properties of the ionised gas in MR 2251−178 and PG 1126−041, two nearby (z ≃ 0.06) bright quasars (QSOs) hosting sub-pc scale ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) detected in the X-ray band. We decomposed the optical emission from diffuse gas into a low- and a high-velocity components. The former is characterised by a clean, regular velocity field and a low (∼80 km s−1) velocity dispersion. It traces regularly rotating gas in PG 1126−041, while in MR 2… Show more

“…The data analysis was executed using custom Python scripts, following an approach similar to that described in Venturi et al (2018), Mingozzi et al (2019), and Marasco et al (2020). We briefly summarise it in the following.…”

“…The large field-of-view (FoV) and high sampling (0.2 /spaxel) of the instrument, together with the excellent seeing at Paranal (typically 0.6 -0.8 FWHM) allow us to sample scales of 20-30 pc, below the typical dimensions of average-luminosity H regions (see, e.g, Wisnioski et al 2012 andBeaton et al 2014). Line fluxes were obtained for each spaxel of the datacube by a multi-gaussian fit to each emission line, as described in Marasco et al (2020). We have used these IFU spectra to study the effect of different apertures on the resulting spectra, avoiding any contribution from the DIG.…”

“…AGN outflows have been detected at different scales, extending from a few parsecs to kiloparsecs (e.g. Storchi-Bergmann et al 2010;Veilleux et al 2013;Cresci et al 2015a;Feruglio et al 2015;Kakkad et al 2016Kakkad et al , 2020McElroy et al 2016;Rupke et al 2017;Jarvis et al 2019;Marasco et al 2020;Vietri et al 2018Vietri et al , 2020. In addition, outflows have been observed in multiple gas phases: neutral and ionised as well as atomic and molecular (Cicone et al 2018).…”
