Gallbladder microbiota variability in Colombian gallstones patients

Abstract: Introduction: Gallbladder stones are a very frequently occurring condition. Despite bile bactericidal activity, many bacteria have been detected inside the gallbladder, and gallstones facilitate their presence. Between 3% and 5% of the patients with Salmonella spp. infection develop the carrier stage, with the bacteria persisting inside the gallbladder, shedding bacteria in their feces without signs of infection. The aim of this study was to isolate bacteria from Colombian patients with gallstones, using stand… Show more

“…58 cases of R. terrigena in another hospital in Pakistan were reported during 2013‐2018 years, 12 patients of which were colonized without clinical symptoms 22 . There were isolated 2 strains of R. terrigena from the gallbladders in patients with gallstones after cholecystectomy, 33 but without connection between stone formation or inflammation and isolated pathogens.…”

“…In Colombia, Arteta et al, evaluated the vesicular microbiota in patients with gallstones from two populations who underwent cholecystectomy and who did not present symptoms of acute inflammation. When the tissue of the gallbladder and bile had positive cultures, Raoultella terrigena was one of the two most frequent bacteria, suggesting differences in the microbiota between the populations [61].…”

“…The microbiome could also be an important target for therapy [1,3]. Indeed, faecal transplants have been suggested for IBD and other diseases [4,5], although selective use of probiotics, prebiotic foods and/or supplements that less invasively modulate the gut microbiome may be more palatable [5].…”
