Game-Based Learning for Green Building Education

Abstract: Abstract:To improve education regarding sustainability and green buildings, we designed a multiplayer (2-4 people) green building strategy game called GBGame to deliver knowledge of and introduce applied technologies for green buildings. To verify the game's learning effect, we conducted separate measurements using the ARCS motivation model and a paper-based exam among 72 students majoring in architecture. “…Previous studies have reported that certain features of board games can create an autonomous learning environment which encourages role playing for experiential learning, engagement in goal-orientated motivation, acquiring knowledge of procedural rules and mechanisms, and social learning through player interaction [33][34][35][36] used in SSI-based learning. Juan and Chao (2015) designed a board game named "Green Building" which teaches students about the relationships between building, industry, and the environment through game feedback mechanisms [37]. Mostowfi, Mamaghani, and Khorramar (2016) developed an educational board game to teach players about recycling.…”

“…Lan et al (2016) discussed the relationship between learning satisfaction and learning outcome and revealed the remarkably positive effect of learning satisfaction on learning outcome. Juan and Chao (2015) found out the moderately positive correlation between learning satisfaction on learning outcome of students in PE classes in elementary schools in Taipei City and New Taipei City. Shi (2017) proved the notably positive correlations between students' learning satisfaction and learning outcome in swimming lessons.…”
