Games

Abstract: Games can provide learners genuine and varied access to their target language including opportunities to make use of authentic input, interaction, negotiation of meaning, and output. Studies on gaming have become increasingly popular since the turn of the century (Hwang & Wu, 2012), with more focus placed on digital gaming over other modalities. This entry discusses key terms in SLA gaming research, and provides current popular examples of different gaming genres.
