Gamification as an approach to improve resilience and reduce attrition in mobile mental health interventions: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Forty percent of all general-practitioner appointments are related to mental illness, although less than 35% of individuals have access to therapy and psychological care, indicating a pressing need for accessible and affordable therapy tools. The ubiquity of smartphones offers a delivery platform for such tools. Previous research suggests that gamification-turning intervention content into a game format-could increase engagement with prevention and early-stage mobile interventions. This study aimed to explore … Show more

“…While some of these interventions could be adapted to an online mode through smartphone applications, attrition rates could remain an issue. Gamification, offering monetary compensation, regular reminders and online (rather than offline) enrollment may foster retention of smartphone delivered programs [ 44 , 45 ].…”

“…Cybersecurity risks for mobile apps connected to the internet and networks are addressed by data encryption, authentication, code integrity, identification of vulnerabilities, and abilities to detect cybersecurity events. Another real-life challenge is patient adherence to digital interventions which may vary depending on type of delivered modalities ( Baumel et al, 2019 ), and can be improved by personalization and gamification ( Litvin et al, 2020 ; Wei et al, 2020 ). While digital interventions are considered as non-invasive and relatively low-risk for patients, the safety of mobile medical apps has not been systemically studied.…”

“…Attrition in naturalistic settings involves nonusage or discontinuation of usage, whereas attrition in research settings can involve these usage patterns along with dropouts from the study itself [ 4 ]. Nonusage and discontinuation of usage can limit the therapeutic potential of mHealth, and the development of methods to increase the sustained uptake of mHealth interventions is an area of active research [ 5 , 6 ]. In research contexts, attrition can not only attenuate therapeutic effects but can also produce additional problems such as reduced statistical power and the introduction of bias.…”
