Gamma Knife surgery for craniopharyngioma: report on a 20-year experience

Abstract: ObjectAlthough craniopharyngiomas are benign intracranial tumors, their high recurrence rates and intimate associations with surrounding neurovascular structures make gross tumor resection challenging. Stereotactic radiosurgery has been introduced as a valuable adjuvant therapy for recurrent or residual craniopharyngiomas. However, studies with large patient populations documenting long-term survival and progression-free survival rates are rare in the literature. The current study aims to report the long-term … Show more

“…With respect to endocrine outcomes, new endocrinopathies have been observed in 6.1-90% of the cases after any surgical and/or radiation therapy for craniopharyngiomas (Table 4) (6,12,16,18,21,24,33,40). Accurate rates for developing new endocrinopathy have not been reported in patients treated with neuroendoscopy followed by radiotherapy.…”

“…Of note, the definition of control varies across institutions as not all authors had details regarding tumor cyst growth and so forth. From the largest series (137 patients), at last follow‐up, 53.9% of patients had tumor shrinkage, 1.6% stable tumor, 16.4% had tumor growth, 14.8% had initial tumor shrinkage followed by delayed growth, 4.7% had new lesions outside the radiosurgery field, and 8.6% had cyst enlargement …”
