Gamma- Ray Spectroscopic and Pixe Analysis of Beach Rock Samples of South East Coast of Tamilnadu, India

Abstract: Beach rock samples collected from South East Coast of Tamilnadu was analyzed by natural radioactive measurements to detect the presence of radioactive elements. PIXE technique was used to obtain elemental composition of beach rocks. The PIXE analysis was carried out using 1.7 MV tandem accelerators with the energy of 2 MeV protons at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamilnadu, India. The geochemical behavior of the elements in the region is discussed. The occurrence of the radioacti… Show more

“…The assignment has been made on the basis of characteristics IR wave numbers in minerals. By comparing the observed frequencies with the available literature, the different types of inclusions were identified in the pottery samples such as quartz, orthoclase, albite, hematite, magnetite, kaolinite, calcite, gypsum, montmorillonite and illite [7][8][9] . The mineral wise discussion is as follows.…”

“…Beach rock formation is found in many places in the world [2e12] and few places in India [13e15]. The beach rock samples of Tamilnadu were analyzed for cementating minerals and to study the elemental composition Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) and Particle Induced Xray Emission (PIXE) techniques were used [16,17]. One such beach rock formation is found in the Andman Island [13].…”

“…[19][20][21] Other instruments based on X-rays that have been less frequently used in the decreasing order are Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), 22,23 Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF), 24 and Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). 25 m-EDXRF has importantly contributed to the analysis of geological materials, mainly as a standard instrument for the characterization of the major and selected trace elements in igneous rocks, and in a wide range of geochemical research projects. 26 SEM complemented by the determination of elemental composition via EDX spectroscopy has been used to distinguish different cement generations and is fundamental for the chemical characterization of the microcrystalline precipitates and obtaining Mg 2+ /Ca 2+ ratios.…”
