Gamow-Teller and double- β decays of heavy nuclei within an effective theory

Abstract: We study β decays within an effective theory that treats nuclei as a spherical collective core with an even number of neutrons and protons that can couple to an additional neutron and/or proton. First we explore Gamow-Teller β decays of parent odd-odd nuclei into low-lying ground, one-phonon, and two-phonon states of the daughter even-even system. The low-energy constants of the effective theory are adjusted to data on β decays to ground states or Gamow-Teller strengths. The corresponding theoretical uncertain… Show more

“…The single (or low-lying) state dominance is also invoked in Refs. [16,17] where also a good agreement with the experimental M 2ν matrix element was reached. However, according to our evaluation, some more positive contributions to the M 2ν in such a case are missed, as well as negative contributions from the higher lying 1 + states.…”

“…The pairing-vibrational aspects of the 2νββ decays of 128,130 Te were studied within the framework of a hybrid model in [547]. In [548] an effective theory to describe β and ββ decays was proposed. In this theory one can estimate the uncertainties based on power counting of the included degrees of freedom.…”
