GaN-Based Versatile Waveform Generator for Biomedical Applications of Electroporation

Abstract: Biomedical applications often require high-performance power supplies for diagnosis and treatment systems. In particular, modern electroporation techniques for cancer treatment require highvoltage generators with versatile waveform generation. In this context, sinusoidal waveform generation has been recently identified as beneficial for electrochemotherapy cancer treatments. This paper proposes the design of a high-voltage high-frequency arbitrary waveform generator taking advantage of Gallium Nitride (GaN) de… Show more

“…Whereas transmission lines or Blumlein generators, although they are also among the conventional types, they take the advantage of inductive storage [15]. Today, soft switching techniques and/or resonant generators [16], solid-state pulsers [17], and wide bandgap-based designs [18] [19] are joined in the methods and components. Moreover, different topologies originally designed for different purposes like modular multilevel converters used in high voltage direct current transmission lines have been able to be adapted to generate pulses [9].…”

“…Fully utilizing the benefits of the CHB concept, [89] describes an amplifier for medical application (electroporation) that consists of 20 cascaded cells with 60 V DC each. Making use of 80 V GaN devices and a combination of staircase modulation and PWM operation of one cell with a switching frequency of 1 MHz, the amplifier can generate bursts of a 500 kHz sinusoidal output voltage with an amplitude of up to a about 1 kV at 7 A rms load current.…”
