Ganglioneuroma Originating From the Trigeminal Nerve in the Middle Cranial Fossa

Abstract: A 55-year-old man present with a case of ganglioneuroma manifesting as sudden onset of severe headache. T 1 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a heterogeneously enhanced mass (3 × 3 × 2.5 cm) in the left middle cranial fossa compressing the left cavernous sinus. The tumor was totally removed through a frontozygomatic approach. The histological diagnosis was ganglioneuroma originating from the second division of the trigeminal nerve in the middle cranial fossa. Ganglioneuroma can occur wherever g… Show more

“…Ganglioneuromas (GN) are benign tumors of neural crest origin, which arise from the peripheral nervous system or adrenal glands. Intracranial involvement of GN is extremely rare and there have been only six cases reported of GN arising from the trigeminal nerve until 2017 [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…However, GPNs can also be caused by compression of a nerve by a mass lesion. There is several reports where tumors are associated GPN 1 , 2 , 3 , 6) where ix nerve is compressed by extrinsic large size tumor in cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) but till today, there is no report of glossopharyngeal nerve ganglioneuroma or ganglioneuroma of ix nerve with pre-existing GPN. Here, we report a case of very small glossopharyngeal nerve ganglioneuroma near jugular foramen (JF) and the patient also had longstanding GPN.…”

“…Ganglioneuroma is a neural crest origin tumor commonly occurs in mediastinum, adrenal glands, and peripheral nervous system but very rarely it occur in cranial cavity. [1][2][3] Very few cases of intracranial ganglioneuroma arising from the trigeminal nerve have been reported in the literature. 2,3) Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is a rare clinical condition characterized by intense lancinating pain in throat commonly triggered by swallowing 4) but also by talking, chewing, yawning, and laughing.…”

“…gion, [2][3][4][5][6][7][8] with only three cases has been reported arising from trigeminal nerve. [2][3][4] The current paper presents a 49-year-old male patient with a ganglioneuroma arising from right trigeminal ganglion and extending to the middle-posterior cranial fossa.…”

“…[2][3][4] The current paper presents a 49-year-old male patient with a ganglioneuroma arising from right trigeminal ganglion and extending to the middle-posterior cranial fossa. We summarized the clinical and diagnostic characteristics of this extremely rare tumor, in comparison with the three reported cases in literatures.…”
