Gaps in international nutrition and child feeding guidelines: a look at the nutrition and young child feeding education of Ghanaian nurses

Abstract: Nurses demonstrated adequate nutrition and YCF knowledge, but reported a lack of in-depth nutrition knowledge and YCF education for children 2-5 years of age, specifically education and knowledge of YCF beyond complementary feeding. To optimize child health outcomes, a greater depth of nutrition and YCF education is needed in international health guidelines.

“…In terms of the barriers constraining adherence, lack of in-service training on NG tube feeding was the cogent constraint identified by 91% of the respondents. This constrain has been reported in similar studies on Ghana [7, 21, 2528] and other countries [6, 17, 29]. Limited health budgets to support staff in this regard has culminated into lower frequencies of trainings for staff resulting in many clinicians practising with obsolete knowledge.…”

“…For nurses' involvement to be effective, they need to be trained to give in-depth nutrition education, a skill they often lack (DiMaria-Ghalili et al, 2014). For example, a study by Davis et al (2017) among Ghanian nurses reported a lack of in-depth nutrition knowledge and young child feeding (YCF) education as a barrier to effective nutrition education. Perhaps incorporating other influential actors may also make up for this gap in nutrition education.…”

“…With regard to approaches employed in counselling caregivers, in similar studies, health talks emphasizing key nutrition and IYCF messages were delivered at the beginning of a day’s activities in child health facilities [13, 34]. According to Agbozo, (2016) [13] counselling services to caregivers could be provided collectively for a group of caregivers or on an individual basis.…”
