“…Conservation of the genetic resources should be seen as a priority because of the threat of extinction of the species and the reduction of the biodiversity in several ecosystems (Draper et al 2004;Beardmore et al 2014;Teixido et al 2017). Therefore, conservation plans are necessary to ensure the preservation of the vegetal biodiversity and to allow the reintroduction of endangered species in the short, medium and long term, thereby reducing the odds of species becoming irreversibly extinct (Cochrane et al 2007;Beardmore et al 2014;Teixido et al 2017).…”

“…The "Action or Initiative" represents a set of activities taken by the Agent towards the achievement of the GSPC Targets. A review of the literature was undertaken to identify documents, reports, and articles related to GSPC targets in Brazil. The review highlighted that literature on GSPC implementation in Brazil is scarce and only the following references were noted: (Forzza et al 2012) (Teixido et al 2017) (Zenni, Dechoum & Ziller 2016) (Ziller et al 2007) (da Costa et al 2016) (da Costa et al 2017. Therefore, we decided instead to explore the National Biodiversity Targets (NBT) expressed in the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) (Ministério do Meio Ambiente 2017), thereby allowing us to build up a relationship map between the NBT and the corresponding GSPC targets.…”

“…Since the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2002, the number of ex situ conservation facilities for wild species has grown dramatically, but little information is available about the extent to which plant species are appropriately represented in ex situ collections (Godefroid et al 2011;Cibrian-Jaramillo et al 2013;Rivière and Mül-ler 2017;Teixido et al 2017). This study assesses the conservation value, both qualitative and quantitative, of germplasm conserved in MSB in terms of its: (1) biological status; (2) taxonomic diversity (Ojeda et al 1996); (3) geographic representativeness (Godefroid et al 2011;Cibrian-Jaramillo et al 2013;Kricsfalusy and Trevisan 2014); (4) vulnerability to extinction (Rivière and Müller 2017); (5) uniqueness and irreplaceability (Vane-Wright et al 1991;Ojeda et al 1995;Isaac et al 2007); (6) natural capital value; (7) population value; (8) germplasm quality; and (9) use for conservation, research, education and display.…”
