Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric investigation of the chemical composition of the aquatic plant Wolffia arrhiza (Lemnaceae)

Abstract: The ether and methanol extracts of Wolffia arrhiza (Lemnaceae) were analyzed using high resolution capillary gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The ether extract contains 32 compounds, mostly lipids and sterols, among which β-sitosterol is most prevalent. This is the first evidence of β-sitosterol detection in W. arrhiza. The most representative group of polar compounds of the methanol fraction is formed by 18 free amino acids. In addition, in the methanol extract there are a number of … Show more

“…The main components were sitosterol (53%), campesterol (18%), and stigmasterol (15%) followed by D5-avenasterol (11%). Sitosterol content appeared to be determined by the species, as observed from the investigations on W. arrhiza by Kotowska [2]. Duckweeds seem to be one of the plants having a high phytosterol content.…”

“…β-sitosterol and stigmasterol have been found in the ether extract of W. arrhiza [2]. Phytosterols are a subgroup of the steroid alcohol bearing resemblance in chemical structure to cholesterol and have been reported, and especially β-sitosterol, to possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiarthritic, and antinociceptive activities without major toxicity [9].…”

“…β-sitosterol and stigmasterol are important phytohormones that play a crucial role in plant resistance to pathogen infection and have been found in the extract of W. arrhiza. These compounds have high antimicrobial activity, and, have therefore boosted the interest from pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies as nutraceutical constituents [63].…”

“…Lemnoidea (genera Landoltia , Lemna , and Spirodela ) has two meristematic regions in the mother frond. In contrast, Wolffioideae (genera Wolffia and Wolffiella ) has a single meristematic pouch in the mother frond [ 16 , 17 ]. Landoltia , formerly Spirodela punctata , is a duckweed with two attached fronds [ 18 , 19 ].…”
