Gas chromatographic separation of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, and water

Abstract: Sir: Hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen chloride, and water have been determined individually in a variety of materials by a number of investigators. Excellent background material can be found in the book by Jeffrey and Kipping (7) and the references contained therein. More recently Hodges and Matson (2) have separated C02, COS, H2S, CS2, and S02 using several different columns. Bennett (3) determined water in various organic materials using 5 % Carbowax 20M on Teflon powder. Prokop'eva and Bukina (4) coated all the … Show more

“…Though Hollis [7] and Obermiller [8] reported that HCi and H 2 O may be separated either by a Porapak or a 5% Carbowax 200 column using either a stainless steel or teflon-coated thermal conductivity detector^such separation of HC/ was not successful under the present operating conditions. Pretreatment of the column and detector with HCX were shown to be necessary.…”

“…These modifications will be incorporated in future attempts to include HCj^gas in the separations. Although HCjJ , reportedly, can be separated by the chromatographic technique, the minimum detectable limit is only 0.17o using a 5 cc sample [8].…”
