“…In particular, the goals of this survey were to: (i) carry out a preliminary study to characterize composition, distribution and behaviour of the geo-gas (CH 4 , Rn, He, CO 2 , H 2 , etc) in the geological layers closer to the surface, (ii) define the baseline or background values, (iii) delineate the origin of shallow and deep fluids, and (iv) establish the presence of preferential migration pathways (i.e., fractures and faults) and carrier roles (Ciotoli et al, 1998(Ciotoli et al, , 2005Quattrocchi et al, 1999Quattrocchi et al, , 2001Quattrocchi et al, , 2004bMancini et al, 2000;Salvi et al, 2000;Baubron et al, 2002;Pizzino et al, 2002Pizzino et al, , 2004aVoltattorni et al, 2006Voltattorni et al, , 2009Lombardi and Voltattorni, 2010).…”

“…An area in proximity of Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands, southern Italy) was interested by a huge submarine volcanic-hydrothermal gas burst during November, 2002. The submarine gas emissions chemically modified seawater causing a strong modification of the marine ecosystem and the death of mainly benthonic life forms and serious damage to the sea-grass Posidonia oceanic (Voltattorni et al, 2009 Capaccioni et al (2007), a possible explanation for the temperature variability at the different gas emission points is related to an inferred magmatic system centred on or closer to Black point and whose diameter probably does not exceed a few hundred meters. Vents 1 and 2 have recorded the lowest values (mean values, respectively: 39.75 and 33.8 °C).…”

“…The migration of carrier gas by bubbles is a transport mechanism explaining the distribution of CO 2 and CH 4 (carrier gases) and radon and helium (trace gases) (Etiope and Martinelli, 2002;Voltattorni et al, 2009;Annunziatellis et al, 2008). For this reason, the isotopes of radon (222Rn and 220Rn) have been measured by a) scintillation detector EDA RD-200, b) solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD), c) ionization chamber and d) alpha spectroscopy SARAD RTM 2100.…”
