Gas Hydrate Formation by Methane‐Helium Mixtures

Abstract: Equilibrium conditions for gas hydrates formed by methane-helium mixtures with helium concentrations of 31.9, 63.9, and 74.6 mol.-% have been studied at pressures up to 160 bar. The data obtained indicate that in the studied range of helium concentrations and pressures helium hardly contributes to the stability of the gas hydrate formed. The shift of equilibrium conditions to lower temperatures and higher pressures is caused by dilution of methane in the gas phase and, consequently, the decrease in the chemica… Show more

“…Gas mixture 11 contains a limited number of CH 4 -containing, binary, hydrate-forming mixtures that do not belong to any of the other CH 4 -containing gas mixtures that have been previously discussed. In addition to CH 4 , the examined binary gas systems contain He, , CF 4 , CHF 3 , and C 3 H 6 S . The detailed summary of these experimental studies is presented in Table S11 of the Supporting Information.…”

“…The presence of solids alters the thermodynamic conditions (e.g. pressure and temperature) of hydrate formation [3,4]. Dissolved salts disrupt the original structure and chemical properties of water as well as solid surfaces [5].…”

“…Gas hydrate formation and dissociation is strongly dependent on pressure, temperature and composition of gas [1][2][3][4]. However it can be affected by the presence of external components like bentonite with relatively large surface area.…”

“…It was necessary to await until 2018 for the publication of novel data concerning the first experimental confirmation of helium inclusion in sII clathrate hydrate (ice XVI) and ice I h . In the meantime, a few theoretical studies on pure He-filled ices [14][15][16][17][18], as well as computational and experimental findings in helium containing mixtures, have been published [19][20][21][22].…”
