Gas-Phase Acidities of Some Neutral Brønsted Superacids:  A DFT and ab Initio Study

Abstract: For the first time G2 or G2(MP2) calculations or both have been performed to calculate the acidity and deprotonation enthalpy of classical strong mineral acids HClO4, CF3SO3H, FSO3H, H2SO4, HBF4, HPO3, and HNO3. Also, the intrinsic acidities and gas-phase deprotonation enthalpies for 39 neutral strong or superstrong Brønsted acids, Brønsted−Lewis conjugate acids, and some compounds modeling the acidic clusters of zeolites were calculated using the DFT B3LYP 6-311+G** approach. DFT B3LYP method at 6-31+G* basis… Show more

“…Therefore, for the purposes of comparison, we used the gas-phase acidities of the corresponding conjugate acids, either experimental (HX) or calculated (HNO 3 , H 2 SO 4 , HClO 4 , and HBF 4 ). [37][38][39] By using these values, a . TBA = tetra-n-butylammonium, TPA = tetra-n-propylammonium, TEA = tetraethylammonium.…”

“…[11] This definition may be seen in analogy to Brønsted acids: Brønsted superacids are stronger than the strongest conventional Brønsted acid, 100 % H 2 SO 4 . [12] Analogously, SbF 5 is commonly viewed as the strongest conventional Lewis acid.…”

“…They sublime under vacuum, or melt at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures well above 150 8C. Gas-phase acidities have been calculated for carborane acids, which rank them the strongest of any known isolable acid, [6] but it is presently not possible to translate gas-phase DG data into measures of condensedphase acidity.…”
